| 6/7/2010 | AGING BOOMERS TO CHANGE NATIONAL LANDSCAPE OVER NEXT 20 YEARS, CENSUS BUREAU STUDY REVEALS
Meals On Wheels programs among those that will respond to changing demographic
MASSILLON, OH — Between now and 2030, the generation of Americans known as the "Baby Boomers" will move into the 65-and-older age category.
As a result, the "dependency ratio"—a term used by the U.S. Census Bureau to define the ratio of retired Americans to those of working age—will increase from 22 percent today to 35 percent in 2030.
Overall, the percentage of Americans over age 65 will increase from 13 percent in 2010 to 19 percent in 2030. With that group continuing to live longer lives, the percentage of the population age 85 and above will grow to 21 percent by 2050.
These and other findings are contained in a Census Bureau report, "The Next Four Decades: The Older Population in the United States, 2010 to 2050." The report offers an analysis of national population projections that were released in August 2008.
"As the percentage of population above 65 increases, so will the need for health care and essential social services," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties and chairman of the Meals On Wheels Association of America. "Meal delivery and nutrition programs like Meals On Wheels will be vital to the independence and quality of life enjoyed by those in their retirement years."
Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties provides nutritional support to homebound individuals of all ages through delivery of hot meals, breakfast meals, sack suppers, frozen meals, chopped meals, pureed meals and liquid supplements (pending physician referrals). Meals are delivered Monday through Friday. The agency also provides congregate dining at selected sites in the two-county area.

| 3/08/2010 | MEALS ON WHEELS RECEIVES GRANT FROM WALMART FOUNDATION
Funds will assist with purchase of new delivery truck
MASSILLON, OH – Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties has been awarded $15,000 through a Walmart Foundation grant program being administered by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA).
The grant was provided to help the agency purchase a new 12-foot box truck, which will be used for daily deliveries of food prepared at the agency's commissary in Massillon to its 20 sites in the two-county area.
"Seniors have been hit especially hard in this economy and we feel a responsibility to help," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. "We're proud to support Meals on Wheels programs across the U.S. who work on the front lines of ending senior hunger."
Locally, Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties provides more than 2,000 meals a day to homebound individuals of all ages, and to congregate dining guests at 14 of the sites.
According to Teresa Barry, CEO, one of the agency's trucks broke down late last year, making early morning deliveries to its sites a significant challenge.
"The Walmart grant covers a portion of the purchase price of a new truck, so it's a tremendous boost for us," said Barry. "We need to raise additional funds to offset the cost and would welcome contributions for that purpose."

| 1/28/2010 | MEALS ON WHEELS RETURNS TO THE CANAL FULTON AREA
Agency eyes growth in Northwest Stark, Southern Summit counties
MASSILLON, OH – Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties will have a renewed presence in Canal Fulton and the surrounding area beginning Monday, Feb. 1.
The agency will start delivering meals that day out of their location at St. John Lutheran Church on West Market Street. Vivian Heater will serve as the site coordinator.
"We're grateful to Pastor Nickodemus and the church council at St. John for providing facilities to support us in our mission," said Teresa Barry, CEO.
Food is prepared weekday mornings at the agency's commissary in Massillon. It is delivered via insulated trucks to 19 outlying sites for home delivery and congregate dining.
Volunteer drivers deliver the meals between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. The agency can accommodate less frequent deliveries, including once-a-week service, according to an individual's preference and need.
A number of individuals in the Canal Fulton area already receive daily meal deliveries, and the agency expects that number to grow.
"Many people don't realize that they qualify for meal delivery," said Barry. "Our meals are available to any homebound individual, regardless of age or income. They can be contracted on a short-term or long-term basis, and we can begin service within two working days of receiving a request."
"Our social services team works with individuals to provide a personal assessment of their nutritional needs," said Barry. "In addition to people who are permanently homebound, individuals recuperating from illness or injury find the nutritional support provided by our meals to be a key ingredient to their recovery."
Regular, low sodium and diabetic meals are available. "Anyone in need of specialized diets will find our meals appropriate as a source of nutrition for their daily needs," said Barry.
The agency hopes to recruit additional volunteers to help deliver meals in Canal Fulton. "Our volunteers typically drive once a week," said Barry. "Our Canal Fulton route currently takes about 60 minutes to complete."

| 1/14/10 | NATIONAL MEALS ON WHEELS STUDY REVEALS
SENIOR HUNGER ON THE RISE IN OHIO, NATION
MASSILLON, OH — Senior hunger is on the rise in Ohio.
The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) has released a groundbreaking study titled "Senior Hunger in the United States: Differences across States and Rural and Urban Areas."
A follow-up to a previous landmark report on the causes and consequences of senior hunger in the country, the latest study examines the problem on a state-by-state level. It provides substantial evidence that the number of seniors in the U.S. facing the threat of hunger is growing at an alarming rate.
In Ohio, one out of every 20 seniors (persons age 60 and older) is at risk of hunger, placing the state 26th in the nation. Most alarming is the jump between 2001 and 2007, the dates covered by the study.
For the years 2001 to 2003, the rate of food insecurity* (risk of hunger) among seniors in Ohio was 3.35 percent. By 2007, the rate had more than doubled, to 6.98 percent.
"It is troubling to learn that so many of our seniors are still going hungry," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties and chairman of MOWAA. "Even more disturbing is the realization that the number increased so significantly over the past decade. We work to combat that on a daily basis at Meals On Wheels," she said.
Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties provides about 2,000 meals a day through home delivery and congregate dining sites in the two-county area.
In response to the problem of senior hunger, MOWAA has initiated a national movement to end senior hunger by 2020.
"It is a travesty that in this, the richest nation on Earth, our seniors are going to bed hungry," said Enid A. Borden, President and CEO of MOWAA. "We have the cure to end senior hunger today. We just need the leadership and the courage to get it done."
Organizations and individuals are encouraged to join the campaign by pledging support at www.mowaa.org/pledge. Participants can fulfill their pledge by volunteering with their local Meals On Wheels agency, making a financial contribution, or assisting with local fundraising efforts, among other activities.
"Because the need is so great, we welcome all those who are willing to step up to the plate and pledge to make a difference," said Barry.

| 1/6/10 | INNIS MAGGIORE PARTNERS WITH MEALS ON WHEELS
TO HELP LAUNCH OUTPATIENT NUTRITION PROGRAM
Service to provide five-day meal packs to discharged patients
MASSILLON, Ohio – Innis Maggiore, an advertising and public relations agency located in Canton, has donated $1,000 to Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties (MOWSW) to help launch an outpatient nutrition program.
The program will assist patients over 60 who have been discharged from hospitals and other health care facilities but are still recuperating or rehabilitating at home. Innis Maggiore's donation will enable Meals On Wheels to provide five-day meal packs for up to 100 discharged patients.
"This program is vital, because studies have shown that seniors who receive immediate nutritional support upon discharge are less likely to be readmitted in the first 30 days following a hospital stay," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties.
In addition, patients served by such a short-term program often choose to request meal delivery on an ongoing basis. This results in a long-term benefit to those in the community who need it.
"This is an exciting and innovative program that will help people retain their independence and live with dignity," said Dick Maggiore, president and CEO of Innis Maggiore. "We commend Meals On Wheels and are pleased to provide support for their efforts."

| 05/14/09 | GARDEN PROJECT AT STARK COUNTY JAIL TO BENEFIT
MEALS ON WHEELS OF STARK & WAYNE COUNTIES
OSU Extension, Ohio Farm Bureau key partners in agricultural initiative
MASSILLON, OH – An innovative project at the Stark County Jail will result in an educational opportunity for inmates and a long-term benefit for the clients of Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties.
Under the guidance of Master Gardener volunteers from the OSU Extension, Stark County office in Massillon and the Stark County Farm Bureau, non-violent inmates at the jail are planting a garden to grow vegetables such as beans, peppers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes and radishes. As the produce is harvested it will be delivered to Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties in Massillon, where it will be used in meals prepared for their clients.
"This program utilizes existing land and resources to benefit many people," said Maureen Austin, Ph.D., extension educator for agriculture and natural resources at OSU Extension, Stark County. "Trustees will grow the vegetables, and in the process more people will have a greater understanding of where food comes from. In particular, it will shine a light on Stark County agriculture, which is abundant."
Vegetables from the garden will become part of the meals served to Meals On Wheels clients. "We prepare our meals daily in our on-site commissary," said Nora Logsdon, program manager and dietician for Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties. "Fresh ingredients are essential to our dishes, and the harvest from the garden project will enable us to serve even more people."
The garden measures 30 feet by 90 feet and is located in a fenced area on the west side of the jail, which is located at 4500 Atlantic Boulevard N.E. in Canton. Up to five supervised inmates will work in the garden at any given time for up to two hours a shift, according to Captain Laura Stewart-Johnson of the Stark County Sheriff's Office.
"Our goal is to provide an education for the inmates and be able to give back to the community," said Stewart-Johnson. "The fact that it doesn't cost us or the taxpayers anything is a real plus."
In addition to the support of the OSU Extension, Stark County office, financial assistance and equipment for the project are being provided by the Stark County Farm Bureau and Hartville Hardware.
"This is an exceptional use of people, land and natural resources," said Nick Kennedy, organization director for the Ohio Farm Bureau for Columbiana, Portage, Stark and Summit counties. "It's a great example of the positive impact agriculture has on the community, and we're proud to support the program."

Agency delivers meals to homebound, nutritionally at-risk in region
MASSILLON, OH – Meals on Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties is currently accepting clients with no waiting required, offering immediate assistance for homebound individuals in the two-county area.
"Our meals are available to any homebound individual, regardless of age or income," said Teresa Barry, CEO. "They can be contracted on a short-term or long-term basis, and we can begin service within two working days of receiving a request."
A licensed dietitian designs the meal plans. Each meal meets one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance for nutrition. Meals are prepared in the agency's commissary, located in Massillon, and delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Regular, low sodium and diabetic meals are available. "Anyone in need of specialized diets will find our meals appropriate as a source of nutrition for their daily needs," said Barry.
Although meals are prepared every weekday, the agency can accommodate less frequent deliveries, including once-a-week service, according to an individual's preference and need.
"Our social services team works with clients to provide a personal assessment of an individual's nutritional needs," said Barry. "In addition to people who are permanently homebound, individuals recuperating from illness or injury find the nutritional support provided by our meals to be a key ingredient to their recovery."
The agency provides more than just a hot meal, said Barry. "Our volunteers are often a homebound client's only daily contact," she said. "Lives have been saved because of the quick response of our volunteers and staff. Family members of clients are comforted by the fact that we check in on their loved ones every day."
Congregate meals are also available at several sites in Stark and Wayne counties for people over 60 who are able to access transportation. Meals are served around 12 noon, Monday through Friday.
"Socialization is an important part of remaining mentally alert and maintaining a positive outlook," said Barry. "Guests at our congregate sites have the opportunity to visit, read, play cards or take part in planned activities."

| 03/03/2009 | WAL-MART FOUNDATION, MEALS ON WHEELS ASSOCIATION AWARD $10,000 GRANT TO MEALS ON WHEELS OF STARK & WAYNE COUNTIES
Funds to underwrite launch of agency-operated catering business
MASSILLON, OH – Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation and Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) that will fund the startup of an affiliated catering business operated by the agency.
This past year, Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties was forced to modify services because of severe operating constraints caused by rising food and gas prices in conjunction with the current economic crisis. The grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation and MOWAA recognizes the agency for developing an innovative and long-term approach to offsetting revenue shortfalls.
"We are grateful to the Wal-Mart Foundation and the Meals on Wheels Association of America for this sustainability grant," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties.
"We are one of the largest food service operations in the region and have a full commercial commissary on site," she continued. "We plan to utilize our outstanding staff and facilities to launch a catering business by June of this year. Our goal is to create an ongoing revenue stream that will strengthen our financial position while providing a highly professional catering service known for its quality and exceptional service."
According to a national study titled "The Causes, Consequences and Future of Senior Hunger in America," which was released by the MOWAA Foundation in 2008, one in nine seniors in America is at risk of hunger. With life expectancies on the rise, the senior population is growing at unprecedented rates, thereby placing a significant strain on the ability of senior nutrition programs to provide meals for those in need. The grant program funded by MOWAA and the Wal-Mart Foundation is intended to ultimately increase the number of people served and reverse the reduction in services seen at programs throughout the nation.
"We're pleased to support the efforts of Meals On Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties," said Enid Borden, president and CEO of MOWAA. "As we seek to end senior hunger in America, we're grateful for the hard work of local Meals On Wheels programs and thankful to the Wal-Mart Foundation for their support during this critical time."

| 2/25/2009 | VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR ‘MARCH FOR MEALS' CAMPAIGN
Month-long program shines spotlight on serving homebound neighbors
MASSILLON, OH – Looking for a way to heed President Obama's call to volunteer service? Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties has just the opportunity for you.
The agency is participating in the 2009 "March for Meals" campaign, sponsored nationally by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA). The campaign emphasizes the need for volunteers at senior nutrition and meal delivery agencies across the country.
"If a person can help us just one time during the month of March, it will be a tremendous boost for our agency and our clients," said Teresa Barry, CEO. "The more people who volunteer during March, the more effective and efficient our service to our homebound clients will be."
Barry said the timing of the March for Meals campaign is ideal. "Most of our volunteers are seniors, and each year a large number of them travel to warmer climates during the winter months," she said. "So having people step forward to volunteer at this time of year helps us fill a number of open routes."
Crucial to the success of March for Meals is the help of The Timken Company. More than 50 Timken employees have volunteered to deliver meals during this year's campaign. "We are grateful to Timken and its associates for their ongoing support," said Barry. "Every hour donated by a volunteer makes a difference in the lives of people who rely on us for their nutritional needs."

| 1/26/2009 | MEALS ON WHEELS ANNOUNCES ‘LUNCH BUNCH' PROGRAM
Agency seeks volunteer help from area companies, organizations
MASSILLON, OH – Area companies and organizations can help the homebound by encouraging their employees to volunteer their time for a worthy cause.
Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties recently established the "Lunch Bunch" program, through which businesses and organizations in the two-county region "adopt" a route and encourage employees to volunteer a lunch hour to deliver meals to homebound individuals who are nutritionally at-risk.
"Our agency, perhaps more than most not-for-profit organizations, is volunteer driven," said Teresa Barry, CEO. "We have 64 delivery routes to fill every weekday, making a total of 320 routes every week. Since most of our volunteers assist us once a week, we always have open routes to fill, and the support of area employers makes a huge difference in helping us fulfill our mission."
When an employer participates in the Lunch Bunch program, they agree to adopt a route and handle those deliveries, usually one day a week, throughout the year. Employees agree to help with the route on a rotating basis. Delivery routes begin just before 11 a.m. and last about an hour.
Employers already participating in the Lunch Bunch program include The Timken Company, AultCare and American Electric Power. Several churches, senior care centers and civic organizations also send volunteer teams to help on a weekly basis.
"The Lunch Bunch program not only ensures timely delivery of nutritious meals to those in need, it promotes team-building within participating companies and organizations," said Barry. "It also provides them with a unique way to give back to the community, and affords busy employees the opportunity to be active in community service without taking away precious evening and weekend time from their families."
"The focus of Meals On Wheels on nutrition for the homebound fits our mission," said Cassandra Thomas, associate vice president of community relations for Aultman/AultCare. "We are enthusiastic about the work of Meals On Wheels and encourage our fellow employers in the region to participate in the Lunch Bunch program."

MEALS ON WHEELS PET FOOD DRIVE DOUBLES TOTAL FROM '07
Banfield, The Pet Hospital spearheads ‘Season of Suppers' campaign
MASSILLON, OH – Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties announced today that its annual pet food drive collected more than 5,200 pounds of dog and cat food – more than twice as much as the previous year's total of 2,400 pounds.
The annual drive is part of the "Season of Suppers" campaign sponsored by The Banfield Charitable Trust of Portland, Ore., and Banfield, The Pet Hospital locations nationwide. Locally, the Banfield location inside Petsmart in Belden Village collected 2,350 pounds, or 45 percent of the total. The Banfield location inside Petsmart in Massillon also participated.
The pet hospitals were among 10 locations in Stark and Wayne counties that collected pet food during the drive, which ran from Nov. 1 through the end of December. Other collection points were PBS Animal Health in Massillon and Wooster, Surbey Feed & Supply in Navarre, Tractor Supply in Massillon, Rural King in Wooster, Thorne's Supermarkets in Alliance, and the Kent State Tuscarawas campus in New Philadelphia.
In addition, students from Sauder Elementary School in Jackson Township organized a collection, which netted 655 pounds of pet food for the drive.
"Pets are the direct beneficiaries of this campaign, but our homebound clients are helped as well," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties and chairman of the board of Meals On Wheels Association of America. "Before ‘Season of Suppers' jump-started this nationwide effort, many seniors lacked access to pet food and shared their meals with their pets. Now, both seniors and their pets are getting proper nutrition. It's a wonderful initiative, and we're grateful to everyone who contributed to this year's effort."

ONE IN NINE SENIORS AT RISK OF HUNGER IN AMERICA
Groundbreaking study paints clearest picture yet of action needed
MASSILLON, OH – One in nine seniors in the United States is at risk of hunger, according to a groundbreaking study released by the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA).
The study, titled "The Causes, Consequences and Future of Senior Hunger in America," revealed that more than 5 million seniors – 11.4 percent of the senior population in the country – are at risk of hunger.
"We address this problem daily at Meals on Wheels, but this report painted a clear and undeniable picture of the crisis facing America's senior population," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals on Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties and chairman of the board of MOWAA. "For the first time, we have a comprehensive, objective assessment of the challenges we all face in addressing senior hunger in our country."
Some highlights of the report:
• More than 50 percent of seniors at risk of hunger have incomes above the poverty line;
• Seniors living alone are twice as likely to experience hunger as those who are married;
• Senior households with a grandchild present are four times as likely to be at risk of hunger than those households without a grandchild present
• Food insecurity cuts across the urban-rural continuum. Seniors living in rural areas are as likely to be at risk of hunger as those in urban areas.
"Clearly, the facts about senior hunger in America differ significantly from common assumptions," said Barry. "It is a problem that crosses all social, economic and demographic lines."
Even more serious is the report's conclusion that, by 2025, an estimated 9.5 million senior Americans will experience some form of food insecurity -- a 75 percent increase over the number in 2005.
"People are living longer, and as the baby boom generation ages our senior population will increase," said Barry. "This report suggests that as that generation ages and is confronted by some possibly grim economic realities, the problem of senior hunger will become even more serious."
She said that locally, the challenge of confronting senior hunger remains a significant one.
"Even though we can assist anyone who is homebound, seniors remain the largest population we serve in Stark and Wayne Counties," she continued. "Higher gasoline and food costs have placed a serious strain on our resources, but we remain committed to delivering meals to those who are nutritionally at-risk in our two-county region."
Research for "The Causes, Consequences and Future of Senior Hunger in America" was conducted by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Iowa State University and the Center for Poverty Research at the University of Kentucky, and was funded by a grant from the Harrah's Foundation.
The entire report is available on the MOWAA website at www.mowaa.org/nationalresponse.

Proceeds from the event will serve as a development catalyst for MOWSW so that the agency can continue to meet the demands of a growing community added Barry. MOWSW serves homebound and nutritionally at risk individuals across the two-county area. Since the inception of the agency, more than 9 million meals have been served to individuals throughout our community and that service continues daily, Monday through Friday, as more than 2,000 meals are served up each day.
"Our mission remains steadfast and central to everything we do," Barry added. "To nourish and enrich the lives of individuals of all ages through services which promote independent living and dignity.
"We are the only meal program in the area that is certified by the Meals On Wheels Association of America," noted Barry. "The national certification shows that we are performing our mission of providing nutritional services to the at-risk population in a manner consistent with national program standards."
Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties, unlike other meal programs in the area, offers a three-tiered food plan to individuals of all ages that include hot, cold, pureed or frozen meals. Pending a physician's referral, liquid supplements are also offered.
Cora made her TV debut in 1999, as co-host of Food Network's, Melting Pot with Rocco Di Spirito. She went on to host My Country My Kitchen: Greece, Date Plate and was one of the featured hosts on Fine Living's Simplify Your Life. A documentary, Cat's In The Kitchen was also made about her first James Beard dinner in April, 2002.
In 2005, she made television history on Food Network's Iron Chef America as the first and only female Iron Chef, and in November 2006 Bon Appétit Magazine bestowed her with their Teacher of the Year Award, an award she calls, "the greatest recognition she could achieve as a chef." That month, she was also honored with another great culinary distinction when she was named executive chef of the magazine.
Prior to Iron Chef America, Cora was co-host of Food Network show, Kitchen Accomplished where she worked with a design expert and contractor to surprise a homeowner with a 3-day kitchen makeover. In 2006, Cora appeared alongside Wolfgang Puck in NBC's primetime miniseries, Celebrity Cooking Showdown, where celebrities were paired with famous chefs and competed in a timed cook-off à la Iron Chef.
Outside of the kitchen, Cora is known for her philanthropy. She is president and founder of Chefs for Humanity, an organization which was founded in response to the 2004 tsunami disaster. Modeled after Doctors Without Borders, the not-for-profit gathers the culinary community together to raise funds and provide resources for important emergency, educational and hunger-related causes. In addition to this, she recently became the nutritional spokesperson for UNICEF.
With her recently launched second book, Cooking From The Hip: Fast, Easy, Phenomenal Meals, Cat elevates at-home cooking to new levels. The book applies her "go-with-what-you've got" philosophy to creating simple, yet sensational meals. Cora is currently preparing to open her signature restaurant.
Cora is currently working out the details of her menu for the event, which will be announced at a later date.
This is the second time that MOWSW has hosted a celebrity chef in conjunction with an anniversary celebration as the agency brought Chef Bobby Flay to Stark County in 2003 as part of MOWSW's 30th Anniversary Celebration.
