ONE IN NINE SENIORS AT RISK OF HUNGER IN AMERICA
Groundbreaking study paints clearest picture yet of action needed
MASSILLON, OH – One in nine seniors in the United States is at risk of hunger, according to a groundbreaking study released by the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA).
The study, titled "The Causes, Consequences and Future of Senior Hunger in America," revealed that more than 5 million seniors – 11.4 percent of the senior population in the country – are at risk of hunger.
"We address this problem daily at Meals on Wheels, but this report painted a clear and undeniable picture of the crisis facing America's senior population," said Teresa Barry, CEO of Meals on Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties and chairman of the board of MOWAA. "For the first time, we have a comprehensive, objective assessment of the challenges we all face in addressing senior hunger in our country."
Some highlights of the report:
• More than 50 percent of seniors at risk of hunger have incomes above the poverty line;
• Seniors living alone are twice as likely to experience hunger as those who are married;
• Senior households with a grandchild present are four times as likely to be at risk of hunger than those households without a grandchild present
• Food insecurity cuts across the urban-rural continuum. Seniors living in rural areas are as likely to be at risk of hunger as those in urban areas.
"Clearly, the facts about senior hunger in America differ significantly from common assumptions," said Barry. "It is a problem that crosses all social, economic and demographic lines."
Even more serious is the report's conclusion that, by 2025, an estimated 9.5 million senior Americans will experience some form of food insecurity -- a 75 percent increase over the number in 2005.
"People are living longer, and as the baby boom generation ages our senior population will increase," said Barry. "This report suggests that as that generation ages and is confronted by some possibly grim economic realities, the problem of senior hunger will become even more serious."
She said that locally, the challenge of confronting senior hunger remains a significant one.
"Even though we can assist anyone who is homebound, seniors remain the largest population we serve in Stark and Wayne Counties," she continued. "Higher gasoline and food costs have placed a serious strain on our resources, but we remain committed to delivering meals to those who are nutritionally at-risk in our two-county region."
Research for "The Causes, Consequences and Future of Senior Hunger in America" was conducted by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Iowa State University and the Center for Poverty Research at the University of Kentucky, and was funded by a grant from the Harrah's Foundation.
The entire report is available on the MOWAA website at www.mowaa.org/nationalresponse.

MASSILLON, OH – Meals on Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties is seeking additional volunteers to help deliver meals to homebound individuals in Alliance and the surrounding region.

Outside of the kitchen, Cora is known for her philanthropy. She is president and founder of Chefs for Humanity, an organization which was founded in response to the 2004 tsunami disaster. Modeled after Doctors Without Borders, the not-for-profit gathers the culinary community together to raise funds and provide resources for important emergency, educational and hunger-related causes. In addition to this, she recently became the nutritional spokesperson for UNICEF.

Cora is currently working out the details of her menu for the event, which will be announced at a later date.

The three-month (October-December 2007) drive totaled 2,245 pounds of food collected and distributed. All food stuffs were donated anonymously by individuals and companies throughout the two-county area.
The campaign is part of a national effort that began in 2006 when Banfield, the nation's largest private veterinary practice, and Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) joined forces in an effort to collect and distribute pet food to their clients who have pets.
Locally, the 2006 campaign made quite an impact as over 1,000 pounds of dog and cat food were collected and distributed to MOWSW clients throughout Stark & Wayne Counties. The need however continued to grow, and the 2007 goal was set at 2,000 pounds.
"For many homebound individuals, pets are an important part of the family," said Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties Chief Executive Officer Teresa Barry. Barry, who also serves as president-elect for MOWAA, added "Many times, homebound individuals are sharing the meals they receive with their pets because the individual can't get out or can't afford the cost of pet food. That's why we again undertook this campaign and were hopeful of expanding our reach. Our agency can't thank the great people of Stark & Wayne Counties enough for their time and efforts in helping us to not only reach our goal, but surpass it."
This years drive featured four collection sites including Banfield, The Pet Hospital (5465 Dressler Road NW, North Canton); PBS Animal Health (2780 Richville Drive SE, Massillon & 3200 Lincoln Way East, Wooster) and Camp Bow Wow & Meow Kennel (1630 Jackson Avenue SW, Massillon).
"The Season of Suppers has been a remarkable success this year," said Dr. Jennifer Jellison, veterinarian for North Canton's Banfield, The Pet Hospital. "Our success this year was helped tremendously by the Kent State University veterinary technician students as well as PBS Animal Health here in our area. It is a great joy to be part of such a wonderful program which directly affects our community. I am hopeful we can maintain raising food for needy pets throughout the year that provide unconditional love to their owners."

Passionate about pets and the roles they play in people's lives, Dr. Jellison is an ardent activist for all pets. She is a past board member and speaker for Canine Companions for Independence.
