How long have you been around?
Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties has been in existence for almost
35 years. The agency began service in 1973 as the "Stark/Wayne Nutrition
Project," as a direct service of United Way of Central Stark County. In the
course of its affiliation with United Way, the program underwent a second name
change and became known as "Three Score Dining". The program remained with that
moniker until October 1991, when it became an independent agency and adopted
the Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties name.
What do you do?
The mission of MOWSW is to deliver nutritious meals daily and provide related
support services to those members of our community who have a limited ability
to shop and/or prepare meals for themselves. The purpose of our mission is to
enable our participants to maintain the highest level of independence possible.
Our agency delivers Monday through Friday.
How do you do it?
Getting 2,000 meals out to hungry recipients in a timely fashion five days a
week is not as easy as the agency makes it look! The process begins bright and
early each morning, as the day's meals, expertly planned by our on-staff
dietitian, is prepared and assembled fresh at the agency's on-site commissary
located in Massillon. From there, they are driven out to the agency’s 21
meal-delivery sites throughout Stark & Wayne Counties where site
coordinators and staffers put the final touches on each meal. From there,
several hundred dedicated volunteers take over, each delivering meals to
clients along their designated routes.
